How to Choose Scrubs: A Guide to Fit, Fabric, Sizing and Customization

Sep 28
6 min read

Your scrubs are part of almost every working moment, from the first classroom demonstration to the last task of a busy shift. The right medical scrubs should give you room to move, keep everyday essentials accessible, and help you feel comfortable and professional.

At Medinova, we design scrubs with healthcare professionals and students in mind. Our options include Slim Fit, Classic Fit and Relaxed Fit, jogger and straight-leg cargo pants, sizes XS to 5XL, special sizing, fabric customization and custom embroidery.

Understanding these choices can help you build a scrub uniform that works for your body, your routine and your team.

Slim Fit, Classic Fit or Relaxed Fit: Which Scrubs Should You Choose?

Fit describes the shape of a garment and the amount of room it gives you. Your measurements guide your size; your comfort preferences help determine your fit.

Medinova fit

How it fits

What to expect

Slim Fit

A closer silhouette that follows the body's lines

A more fitted appearance, with the right size allowing comfortable movement

Classic Fit

Roomier than Slim Fit at the same labeled size

A balanced shape for people who prefer extra room while keeping a defined silhouette

Relaxed Fit

A loose fit with a more generous silhouette

A comfortable option for those who prefer their scrubs to sit farther from the body

Slim fit scrubs can suit anyone who enjoys a closer silhouette. Classic fit scrubs provide more room than Slim Fit, while relaxed fit scrubs offer a looser feel.

Any body shape can have a preference for any of these fits. Try sitting, reaching forward and bending your knees when checking a scrub set. The top should allow movement through the shoulders, and the pants should feel comfortable through the waist, hips and thighs.

How Drape Helps Scrubs Fit Different Body Shapes

Drape is the way fabric hangs and falls over the body. It affects whether a scrub top looks fluid or structured, how pants fall from the hips, and how the uniform moves with you.

A softer drape can follow the body's contours, while a more structured fabric can create a more defined shape. The cut, fabric weight and amount of room in the garment all contribute to the result.

Medinova's fit and sizing options are intended to support a range of proportions, including slender, athletic, curvy and plus-size bodies. For example, someone with broad shoulders may need extra room across the upper back, while someone with fuller hips may prioritize space through the seat and thighs.

When choosing scrubs for curvy figures or plus-size scrubs, consider top length, hip room and how the fabric falls when you sit. For a slender frame, check shoulder placement and whether the chosen silhouette gives you the amount of volume you prefer.

A comfortable fit begins with your measurements and the way you want your scrubs to feel.

Jogger Scrub Pants and Straight-Leg Scrub Pants With Cargo Pockets

Medinova offers jogger scrub pants and straight-leg scrub pants, both with cargo pockets.

Jogger scrub pants

Jogger pants taper toward the ankle and finish with a cuff. This creates a sporty silhouette that pairs well with healthcare workwear.

Choose jogger scrubs if you enjoy a tapered leg and a cuffed finish. Check that the calf and ankle feel comfortable when you sit or move, and confirm that joggers are permitted by your school or workplace.

Straight-leg scrub pants with no cuff

Straight-leg pants have an open, uncuffed hem and a straighter line down the leg. They offer a traditional scrub silhouette for those who prefer more room around the lower leg.

Check the inseam while wearing your usual work shoes so the hem falls comfortably without dragging on the floor.

Both styles include cargo storage, so your choice can focus on the leg shape, ankle finish and dress code that suit you.

Thoughtfully Designed Pockets for Everyday Use

Useful scrub pockets begin with the things you reach for during a normal day: a pen, a small notebook, a phone or other permitted essentials.

Medinova's pockets are thoughtfully designed around daily use, with attention to placement, access and how the garment feels when carrying everyday items. Cargo pockets add storage along the leg and give you another place to organize frequently used belongings.

When comparing scrubs with cargo pockets, consider these practical questions:

  • Can you reach the pocket comfortably while standing and sitting?

  • Does its depth suit the items you usually carry?

  • Do your essentials stay accessible without pulling the garment out of shape?

  • Is the pocket positioned comfortably for your height and proportions?

Pocket count is one part of the decision. Placement and usability help determine whether those pockets work for your routine.

Scrub Sizes XS to 5XL, With Special Sizing Options

Medinova offers scrubs in XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL, helping healthcare professionals and students choose from a broad size range.

For the best starting point, compare your chest or bust, waist, hips and inseam with the relevant style's size chart. Consider both your measurements and whether you prefer Slim Fit, Classic Fit or Relaxed Fit.

We also offer special sizing for needs that standard sizes may not accommodate:

  • Petite sizing: For shorter proportions and garment lengths.

  • Custom sizing for people of short stature: For individual measurements and proportions that may need adjustments beyond standard petite sizing.

  • Tall and extra-tall sizing: For people who need additional garment length.

  • Big and tall sizing: For those who need both additional room and length.

Petite describes proportions and length; it does not automatically mean a smaller waist or hip size. Similarly, tall sizing and plus sizing address different needs.

If you need petite scrubs, tall scrubs or another custom size, contact Medinova to discuss your measurements and the available adjustments for your chosen style.

Choosing Scrub Fabric: Comfort, Drape and Everyday Practicality

The fabric you choose influences how your scrubs feel, move and fall. Medinova offers fabric customization so you can discuss the combination that suits your preferences, program or team.

Premium polyester-rayon-spandex blend

Our premium polyester-rayon-spandex option brings together three fibers with different roles. Polyester contributes durability, rayon contributes softness and drape, and spandex adds stretch.

This blend is an option to explore when you want stretch scrubs with a softer feel and a fluid silhouette. The exact blend percentages, fabric construction and weight influence the finished result.

Polyester-cotton blend, also called polycotton

Polycotton scrubs combine polyester and cotton. This blend brings together the practical qualities of polyester and the familiar feel of cotton, making it an option for everyday healthcare uniforms and student scrubs.

If you prefer a more traditional fabric feel, ask about our polyester-cotton options and compare the available fabric weights and finishes.

Is polycotton the same as poplin? These terms describe different things. Polycotton identifies a polyester-cotton fiber blend. Poplin describes a type of woven fabric. A polycotton fabric can be made as poplin, but the terms are not interchangeable.

Polyester-spandex blend

Polyester-spandex scrubs combine polyester with added stretch from spandex. This is another option for people who value flexibility as they reach, sit and move throughout the day.

Compare the actual fabric feel and stretch with your preferred fit. The presence of spandex alone does not specify how far or in which directions a fabric stretches.

100% polyester

Medinova also offers pure polyester, or 100% polyester, as a fabric customization option.

Polyester can support practical, easy-care uniforms, but texture, stretch and comfort depend on how the fabric is made. A 100% polyester label does not automatically tell you whether a garment stretches. Check the specific fabric and follow the finished garment's care instructions.

When discussing custom scrub fabrics, share your priorities for softness, structure, stretch, fabric weight and laundering. These details help guide a more useful conversation than a fabric name alone.

Custom Embroidery for Healthcare Teams and Students

Custom embroidered scrubs can give a clinic, department or student group a coordinated identity.

Medinova offers custom embroidery for names, program or department names, organization names and logos. Whether you are planning nursing school uniforms or healthcare team scrubs, embroidery adds a personal and professional detail.

Before placing an order, confirm the wording, logo artwork, thread colors and placement, along with any school or employer requirements.

Scrubs Designed With Healthcare Professionals and Students in Mind

Choosing medical uniforms involves both personal comfort and the expectations of your workplace or program. Students may need a required color and pant style for clinical placements, while healthcare teams may want coordinated embroidery with different fits and sizes for individual staff members.

Start with your dress code, check your measurements, and choose the fit, fabric and pocket arrangement that support your day.

Whether you prefer slim fit jogger scrubs, classic fit straight-leg scrubs or relaxed fit cargo scrubs, Medinova offers options to explore in XS to 5XL, along with special sizing and customization.
